The Alchemy Index: Vol. III & IV Air and Earth

Grade: C+
by Neil Evans

Thrice's four volume Alchemy Index is an ambitious yet somewhat tedious endeavor. With the release of Air and Earth the concept has been completed and I'm left unsatisfied. The twelve tracks, split in half for each "element," lack the punch of their predecessors (Fire and Water) and really don't command repeated listening. While the tracks on Air are mildly better than those of Earth, that's not really saying much.

For the entire project I find that their translations of all elements involved have been too literal. Song titles refer directly to their topic; air ("Silver Wings"), earth ("Child of Dust"), water ("Open Water") and fire ("Firebreather"). Accordingly, Air songs sounds open and free, Earth songs sounds rustic and dirty, Fire songs are loud and pulsing and Water songs are fluid and soaked with electronics. It would have been more impressive if they stayed within the concept but didn't beat the listener over the head with each theme.

I am not writing off these two discs or the whole project in general. I can appreciate the musicianship and talent that Thrice bring to the table sonically and lyrically. They had an idea, executed it and delivered. I'm sure they love these songs. They have grown as a band and who am I to hate on what they have become. Just because they have matured past their punk and hardcore roots does not mean they are any less of a band. I respect them and they will continue to be one of my favorite live bands. (Stay tuned for a review after I see them May 10).

What it all comes down to is that I'm glad I bought the CD but I don't think that it will stay in regular rotation. I'll probably end up making a master Alchemy Index playlist of all the songs I like off the four albums to cut the filler and enjoy the music more. If your interested, I recommend Volumes I and II, Fire and Water, first and if you like what you hear, proceed on in the project. It's not my favorite work of theirs, but Thrice proves again that it doesn't mean shit what fans think; do what you want and you'll be fulfilled.
