With an incredible mix of bluegrass, classical, and folk-rock, former Nickel Creek mandolinist/vocalist Chris Thile and his new band, The Punch Brothers, tore the Shubert down. The band was setup in a traditional bluegrass style with banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, fiddle, and upright bass, and each member of the band proved his worth during the evening.
Thile, already known as one of the most stunning players in the world music scene at 27, deftly navigated the band through an eclectic two-set show of originals, including the four-part suite of songs known as "The Blind Leaving The Blind," and covers, which jumped from the classic bluegrass of Bill Monroe ("Brakeman's Blues") to an early Beatles number ("Baby's In Black") to the modern rock of The Strokes ("Heart In A Cage") and Radiohead ("Morning Bell"). One of the more impressive aspects of the evening were the vocal harmonies by the band. During their cover of The Strokes' "Heart In A Cage," the band stopped playing entirely and sang the chorus a capella, and any musician, regardless of taste, would have been impressed by the pitch-perfect harmonies the quintet produced. Who needs Auto-Tune with a band like this? While the covers were amazing, the original material was also equally stunning. Songs such as "Watch'at Breakdown" and "The Beekeeper" were executed with flawless precision, with each band member tearing through solos on his instrument with the skill of a master twice his age. Post-show, the band stood near the entrance of the venue, signing autographs and talking with anyone who had the patience to wait in line (which, of course, I did).
While this music is, admittedly, not for everyone, if you appreciate musicianship and a solid performance, this band is not to be missed.
