| NOFX - They've Actually Gotten Worse Live Grade: B+ by Radley Little |

| In January of 2007 NOFX booked three shows at a San Francisco club, got really drunk, and shamelessly recorded the performances. The result is They've Actually Gotten Worse Live, a 24 song CD complete with rare songs, new versions of old songs, and more drunken banter than necessary -- all topped off with a huge practical joke on the listener at the very end. It features songs from 7 of their studio full lengths, not relying on any one more than another.
There's an overall feel of self deprecation and apathy to the album (as is there style) which is quite refreshing in this age of shameless self-promotion.
This album is full of surprises that prevents it from being merely sloppy live versions of old songs. It keeps the listener interested and laughing the whole way through as the band makes fun of audience members, rearranges their songs, and inserts the occasional lyric of or reference to other bands while performing (My Chemical Romance, Green Day, AFI). The rearrangements are the best part of this album. The traditional tempos of songs are completely polarized on tracks like "You're Wrong," "Scavenger Type," Whoops I OD'd," and perhaps the best track on the cd, "We March to the Beat of Indifferent Drum," two thirds of which is slowed down and given a reggae treatment similar to "Eat the Meek." Also at points bassist/vocalist Fat Mike steps down from singing to concentrate on complex bass lines while guitarists El Hefe and Eric Melvin take over vocals. This is just one of many deviations taken that makes the disc fresh and dynamic throughout. The mid point of the album is defined by what has become a live staple of the band, performing a large collection of short songs in a small amount of time, in this case 8 songs in 6 minutes. Albeit an impressive feat, some of the individual songs begin and end before you can get excited about them, and this is the one part of the album that I don't think translates particularly well from live experience to disc. They've Actually Gotten Worse Live is a perfect representation of NOFX. The album encapsulates their humor, self destructive habits and contempt for organized religion while at the same time treating the listener to some of their best songs along with some rarities from lesser known EPs that the casual listener might not have ever heard. For only $10, it's worth picking up from Fat Wreck if you're at all curious.
Best tracks - We March To the Beat of Indifferent Drum; I, Melvin.
